Think you know sales? Think again.

Meet Brian

Forward-thinker.
Goal-setter.
Go-getter.
He’s EE.

To work in sales you have to be loud and extrovert, right? Wrong.

Here at EE, sales is an integral part of our business and we’re always looking for adaptable, target-driven people to help us to deliver the best service. Before Brian joined EE, he’d spent twelve years working in factories. When he joined he only planned on staying for a short while but five years later he’s one of our fantastic Team Leaders. With no previous sales experience, Brian’s been on quite the adventure and now he’s helping his own team to grow – just like he did. We asked Brian to give us the lowdown on what our sales roles are really like – and his comments might surprise you.

You have to be a really competitive person to work in sales, right?

Sure, there’s a bit of friendly competition on the sales floor but it’s not how you imagine. Everyone is super-supportive of each other. After all, our individual targets go into team targets, so everyone in the team needs to do well if we’re going to achieve our goals. It’s a genuinely fun and fast-paced department to work in, and there’s a real sense of camaraderie in the team.

"I am pretty close to my senior managers and I definitely feel like I can rely on them for advice. It’s nice to know they always have my best interests at heart."

You probably don’t get much support?

Sales at EE is the exact opposite of what I expected; everyone wants to support you. Where I worked before, you’d only speak to your manager if you were in trouble but here my manager is always on hand to answer any questions. You’re never just left alone to get on with it. A big part of my job is making sure that my team’s engaged – and I try to make sure that work’s as enjoyable as possible for everyone.

There probably aren’t many development opportunities available?

There are genuine development prospects at EE. We love seeing people grow within the company and would always choose to promote from within instead of hiring externally. One of the best things about EE is that every one is so open and transparent. Throughout my career here I’ve always felt like I can talk to my senior managers and my colleagues about my aspirations. In fact, the support and encouragement I’ve received from them is one of the reasons I am where I am today.

"Sales at EE is so much more than selling. Talking to customers and understanding their needs is a huge part of what we do."

What would you say to someone who’s considering joining the EE sales team?

Do it! It’s not about cold-calling customers and bullying them into parting with their cash. It’s a warm, friendly environment where you’ll be given all the training you need to thrive. What’s most important is that you’re able to put your personality across to customers so that they know they’re speaking to an actual human being. It’s a fantastic place to make connections: with customers and with your colleagues.
